Baby Skin Care in the Cold Months

snow-angelSkin protection is very vital in the cold months of the year. Believe or not, babies are very prone to heat rashes and harsher eczema flare-ups.

Wait…Did I just say Heat Rashes in the Winter?!

Yes! It is a know fact that children can develop heat rashes because some parents pile layers of clothing on them to make sure they are really warm. I for one am guilty of this crime. Being a loving parent, you can’t help it that you want to take the extra precaution to keep your child safe and comfortable. But sometimes as it turns out, we can do more harm than help. Another thing parents must be aware of is that the dry warm air circulating in their home can also add to the cause of the heat rash and baby eczema flare-ups. The dry warm air can dry out your child’s skin, which leads to the itching and scratching, which then leads to a heat rash or an eczema flare up.

If your child develops either of these conditions, dressing them in loose-fitting cotton clothing and avoiding over-bundling. Another thing I’ve found helpful was using a humidifier. I am an advocate of using a humidifier that automatically kills bacteria. The two I like using are the Vicks Pure Mist Humidifier and the Honeywell QuietCare UV Humidifier Tower. Lastly, as I’ve mentioned many times in my previous post, keeping your baby’s fingernails trimmed.  Continuous scratching of the infected areas can lead to secondary infections. And it seem that nothing great every comes out of seeing your child suffer from an infection.

Like always, talk to your doctor or pediatrician before diagnosing your child’s skin condition and finding the right treatments.
